I got a call from a guy in Lakeside Proper who had been dealing with an intermittent no-start on his 2014 Acura MDX for about two weeks. Not a dead battery, not a bad starter. The push-button start just sat there sometimes. He had already replaced the fob battery twice because that was the first thing every forum thread told him to do.

Then I explained what happens if the fob actually does fail down the road. On the 2014 MDX, adding or replacing a smart key is not something you do with a button sequence or an ignition cycle trick. It needs diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to register the new fob with the vehicle's security system. I carry that equipment in the van, and I do that work right here in Lakeside, same day, without a tow and without a dealer appointment a week out.
He did not need a new key that day. He needed someone who checked before replacing. That is the job.
