2008 Acura MDX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you're not a scam locksmith?

Scam locksmiths follow a pattern that's easy to spot once you know it. They quote a vague "service call" fee on the phone, then once you're standing in a parking lot with a car that won't start, the price multiplies. There are real accounts from 2008 MDX owners describing locksmiths who quoted one number and then kept adding fees mid-job for "programming" or "chip fees" with no explanation.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. Once programmed, the replacement remote flip key communicates with the immobilizer the same way the factory key does. The engine starts, the remote lock and unlock work, and the blade opens the door manually if you ever need it. Before I leave your location, I walk every function, buttons included, and confirm the vehicle starts cold.

Q: I have a working key, but can I add a spare for my 2008 MDX without going to the dealer?

Yes, and this is one of the more common calls I get. The 2008 MDX does have an onboard key registration sequence, but it's time-sensitive and requires the existing programmed key to initiate. If you've tried the sequence from a forum post and it didn't take, the most common reasons are a missed timing window or a key that wasn't properly prepared before the attempt.

Q: My 2008 MDX starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. If the engine starts, the transponder side of the key is alive. Remote function loss on its own usually points to the battery before anything else. The CR1616 in this fob is a thin cell and once it drops below a working threshold, the radio signal goes before the transponder does. That's why the car still starts but the buttons do nothing. Swap the battery first.

2008 Acura MDX Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A plumbing contractor called me around 6:30 in the morning from a construction supply yard off the main stretch in Blossom Valley. His crew was already clocked in at a job site across Lakeside and he was the one with the materials truck access. The MDX wouldn't start. The fob wasn't being detected and every second was money.

I was out the door fast. Van was already stocked and I made it to the supply yard in about 25 minutes.

He had his original remote flip key with him, so this wasn't an all-keys-lost situation. I got into the vehicle, connected to the OBD port to read what the immobilizer was seeing, and found the fob had dropped below the voltage threshold the system would accept. The battery was the factory original, so that tracked. Fresh CR1616 in, quick re-registration, and the system came back clean.

Total hands-on time was around 20 minutes. He was rolling toward his job site before 7:15.

He called it the best money he'd spent all month. Not because of the price, but because his crew never knew anything happened.

Acura MDX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Acura vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services locksmith license (LCO#6792) and carries full liability insurance. For a 2008 MDX, the key system is mature enough that access to the immobilizer through the OBD port is a standard part of the job and doesn't require the kind of secure data credentials that newer vehicles demand. What it does require is the right programming equipment and someone who knows this generation's key registration process.
