A plumbing contractor called me at 6:30 in the morning from a construction supply yard on the Westside Escondido side of town. He had a crew already on the clock and his MDX wouldn't start. The fob wasn't being detected, the start button was dead, and he had no time to wait on a dealer.

First thing I did was try the backup start, holding the fob directly to the start button. Nothing came from that either, which told me the battery wasn't the whole story. I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the key registration status, and found the fob had dropped out of the vehicle's memory, most likely from a combination of a dying battery and some kind of reset event. The fob itself was fine. It just needed to be re-paired to the car.
I swapped the CR2032, ran the registration sequence through my scan tool, confirmed both the primary and backup start worked, and walked him through the backup start procedure so he'd know it if it ever came up again.
He was headed to his job site before 7:15. His crew never knew there was a problem. The dealer conversation never came up until he texted me later that afternoon. He'd called them first, before me, and they wanted him to tow it in and book it for the next day. That was a non-starter with a crew waiting.
