2017 Acura MDX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Noticeably more. When you still have one working key, adding a spare is a faster, simpler job. When all keys are lost on the 2017 MDX, the immobilizer has to go through a full reset before any new fob can be registered. That process takes longer and requires a deeper level of access on the diagnostic side. The practical advice: get a spare made while you still have a working key.

Q: Do aftermarket smart keys work on the 2017 MDX, and are they worth buying?

On the 2017 MDX, I am selective about what fobs I use. Aftermarket fobs vary in quality, and on a proximity-based smart key system, a cheaply made fob can cause range issues, inconsistent handle unlock, or problems at the start button even after correct programming. The fob hardware matters, not just the programming. The fobs I carry for the 2017 MDX are ones I have tested and confirmed to work reliably with this system.

Q: My 2017 MDX starts fine but one door handle stopped triggering the smart key unlock. Is the fob failing?

Probably not the fob. If the car starts, the push-button sees the key, and other handles still respond, the fob is most likely fine. Single-handle failures on the MDX are usually a door-side issue: the capacitive sensor in the handle itself, the wiring behind it, or a connector that has worked loose. These handles take a lot of daily contact and the sensors can wear or get moisture intrusion over time.

Q: I have a spare fob for my 2017 MDX that I never programmed. Can I do it myself?

Not on this system. The 2017 MDX smart key requires diagnostic equipment to pair a new fob. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button combo that works on this vehicle. That type of onboard self-programming applies to older bladed transponder keys, not a proximity smart key system like this one. If you have an unprogrammed fob sitting in a drawer, it is essentially inert until someone with the right tools registers it to the car.

2017 Acura MDX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Live Oak Park area of Fallbrook, a night-shift warehouse worker had his only MDX fob go completely unrecognized around 11pm. Car was sitting in the apartment lot, wouldn't start, and he was already looking up tow truck numbers and checking dealer hours for the morning.

He called me instead.

When I got there, the fob wasn't just low on battery. The car had no record of any working key at all. All-keys-lost on this system means the vehicle's immobilizer memory is blank. You can't just program a new fob on top of nothing. You have to do a full security reset through the OBD port, let the system cycle, then register the new fob from scratch. I connected my diagnostic equipment, ran the all-keys-lost procedure, and let the reset do its thing. These have a built-in wait period during the process. You can't rush it.

New fob registered, emergency insert key cut to the vehicle, tested start and all fob functions. Start to finish, maybe 45 minutes in the parking lot.

He had already mentally committed to a tow bill plus a dealer appointment two days out and a loaner he wasn't sure he'd get. Getting it done the same night, on-site, for a fraction of what he was expecting was the part that got him.

I do all-keys-lost on the 2017 MDX on-site regularly. If I run into a vehicle where my tools won't support the job, I tell the owner before I show up, not after.

Acura MDX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a smart key for a 2017 Acura MDX?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. The dealer route on a 2017 MDX smart key means ordering the fob, scheduling an appointment that may be days out, paying separately for the part, programming labor, and sometimes a diagnostic fee on top. You may also need a tow if you have no working key.
