I got the call from Eucalyptus Hills, but the car was sitting in a Lakeside shopping center lot. A woman's purse had been grabbed while she was loading bags into her 2020 MDX. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it went with someone she never saw. She borrowed another shopper's phone to call her husband, then the police, then eventually me.
Her husband had already called the Acura dealer by the time I arrived. The dealer said they could order the parts, but the car would need to be towed in, they couldn't see it for a few days, and because the stolen fob was still out there, they recommended rekeying the locks on top of everything else. The combined estimate was not small.
All-keys-lost is a different job than adding a spare. When a working key exists, the car already trusts it and you're just introducing a new one alongside. AKL means I go into the immobilizer through the diagnostic port, wipe every registered fob from memory, and start completely fresh. The stolen fob becomes useless to the car. No working key left to reference means the procedure takes longer, and it has to be done right or nothing gets registered.
I ran the wipe, enrolled two new smart keys, verified both worked at the door handles and at the start button, and cut the emergency blade so she had a physical backup. She was still finishing the police report when I handed her the second fob.
The stolen fob can still physically touch the door handle. The immobilizer just won't let it go any further than that.
She drove home that night. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a multi-day wait, and a bill that was nearly double what she paid me. Getting a spare made while you still have a working key is always the smarter move, but when life doesn't give you that option, this is how you recover it without losing your car for a week.
