1996 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the key replacement actually take once you arrive at my car?

For a 1996 TL, the work is purely mechanical. If I can reference a key code or decode an existing lock, a new key gets cut and tested in a short time on site. The only thing that stretches the job is extraction work if there is a broken piece in the cylinder, or if the cylinder itself has wear that needs addressing. Either way, you are not looking at hours.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for a 1996 TL?

Yes, and the gap is bigger than people expect on an older vehicle. A dealer has to write a repair order, locate the key code through their records, order or pull a blank, get it to a tech, and cut it. That process can take the better part of a day even when the car is physically at the shop. We come to you, decode or code the key on site, and cut it in your driveway.

Q: My 1996 TL key turns but feels stiff and the ignition is getting harder to start. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

Both are worth looking at together. On a vehicle this age, the key and the ignition cylinder wear against each other over years of use. A key that has been used daily since the mid-90s can be worn enough that it no longer engages the wafers the way it should, which puts extra stress on the cylinder every turn. Sometimes a freshly cut key from the original code solves it.

Q: I only have one key for my 1996 TL. Is it worth getting a spare cut before something goes wrong?

Yes. A single mechanical key on a 28-year-old car is a real risk. These keys wear over time, and if that one key breaks or goes missing, getting a replacement made without any reference key means decoding the locks on site, which adds time and complexity. Having a spare cut now, while you still have a working key to duplicate or code from, is the simpler and faster job.

1996 Acura TL Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Poway, over in the Garden Road Area, who had snapped her only key in the ignition of her 1996 TL. Not bent, not lost. Snapped, with the broken piece still seated in the cylinder.

She had already tried needle-nose pliers. Then a thin flathead. Then, by her own admission, a bobby pin, which made things worse. By the time I got there, the fragment was pushed slightly deeper and the cylinder had a small gouge near the keyway from the flathead. Not catastrophic, but something I had to account for.

I extracted the broken piece with the right tools, then decoded the lock directly since her other key was gone with the broken half. Cut a replacement from a blank right there in the driveway. The new key turned the first time.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a tow, a new cylinder assembly, and a wait of several days. I was at her car in under an hour from the call, and she drove herself to work that afternoon. The dealer comparison was her idea, not mine. I just showed up with the right tools.

Acura TL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a replacement key for my 1996 Acura TL after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments keep regular business hours and most are closed Sundays. A 1996 TL with no working key on a Saturday night means you are waiting until Monday at the earliest if you go that route. We work outside dealer hours, so a lost or broken key on a weekend does not have to become a two-day problem. The job itself is mechanical, so there is no waiting on parts orders or programming windows.
