I got a call out to the Grossmont Area of La Mesa around 11pm on a weeknight. Night shift worker, apartment complex parking lot, only key to his 2014 TL had stopped being recognized by the car. Push-button start, no response at the door handles, key-not-detected warning on the dash. He had already looked up tow company numbers and was trying to figure out when the Acura dealer opened.
I told him to stay put.
He met me in the lot with his fob in hand. The fob itself was original, the factory unit with the emergency blade tucked inside. Before I even opened the kit, I popped it apart and checked the CR2032. Dead. Completely flat. I put a fresh cell in, walked to the door handle, and the car still didn't pick it up. At that point it was clear the fob had been running on fumes long enough that he was in a full all-keys-lost situation.
I connected to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the TL. On this system that means clearing the existing key registrations from the immobilizer and re-enrolling new fobs from scratch. There is a timed sequence built into the process so you just work through it. I registered the new fob, verified the door handles, confirmed the start button was reading it, and tested the emergency blade in the door lock for good measure.
Start to finish in the parking lot, just past midnight, without a tow truck anywhere in the picture.
He had already been mentally preparing for a tow plus a dealer appointment two or three days out. Getting it handled on-site the same night, right there where the car was parked, was apparently not what he expected. I get that a lot with all-keys-lost calls. People assume it has to be a dealer job. On the 2014 TL, it does not.
What the dealer would have quoted was a good chunk more than what he paid, before even factoring in a tow.
