1997 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 1997 Acura TL actually use?

A metal key, cut to the vehicle. That is it. No fob, no remote, no buttons. You put it in the ignition, you turn it, the car starts. Same key works the door locks. At this age, the more relevant question is whether your existing key is worn down, because a heavily used original can get sloppy enough that it starts slipping or getting sticky in the cylinder. A fresh key cut to the correct specification fixes that.

Q: Why does a simple key replacement still take time if there is no programming involved?

Two reasons. First, if the key code is not on file or the original is too worn to copy accurately, the locksmith has to decode the lock directly to get the right cut. That takes a few extra minutes but produces a better result than copying a bad key. Second, if there is a broken key extraction involved, that has to happen before anything else. The cutting itself is fast.

Q: My 1997 TL key turns hard and sometimes gets stuck in the ignition. Do I need a new ignition cylinder?

Not necessarily. On a car this age, the first thing to check is the key itself. A worn key puts uneven pressure on the wafers inside the cylinder, which causes exactly that sticky, hard-to-turn feeling. A replacement key cut to the original specification sometimes resolves it entirely. If the cylinder is genuinely worn out or the wafers are damaged, that is a different job, but it is worth ruling out the key first before pulling the cylinder.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made without the original?

Yes. There are two ways to do it without an existing key. The key code can sometimes be retrieved through the VIN using manufacturer records for vehicles of this era. If that is not available, a locksmith can decode the lock cylinder directly and cut a new key to match. Either way, you do not need a working original to get a replacement made on site.

1997 Acura TL Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Ramona Highlands is the kind of neighborhood where driveways are long and the nearest dealer is a real drive. A guy out there called me because his only key for a 1997 Acura TL had snapped. Not lost, snapped. Half of it was still in his hand and the other half was sitting in the ignition cylinder.

That changes the job. Before a new key does anything, the broken piece has to come out cleanly without damaging the cylinder. I drove out to his place with the extraction tools already in the van.

I got the broken piece out intact, which is the part that can go wrong if you rush it. Then I decoded the lock, cut a replacement key to match, and worked it through the cylinder a few times to confirm smooth operation. No drama, no tow truck, no leaving the car at a shop for two days.

He had one comment after I handed him the new key: he did not realize this could be done in a driveway. Most people assume a situation like that means a flatbed and a dealer visit. It does not.

Acura TL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does an Acura dealer take for a key replacement on an older TL?▼

For a 1997 TL with a mechanical key, the actual cutting takes a few minutes once a tech gets to it. The wait is the problem. Dealers run key work through their service write-up queue, and an older vehicle with no electronic component to program can sit low on the priority list. Owners of late-90s Acuras have reported waits of an hour or more for what is ultimately just a key cut.
