I got a call from a teacher whose school sits just off the west side of Escondido. She had a 2005 Acura TL and one key. That key had been through a few years of daily use and at some point the head cracked along the seam where the plastic meets the blade. She had been babying it, holding the pieces together just enough to get the transponder chip to read. Then one morning in the school parking lot, the engine just cranked. No start.
She called the dealer first. They could get her in the following week. She needed to be in front of a classroom the next morning.
I drove out during her planning period. She met me in the lot, a little wound up but holding it together. I confirmed the blade was intact and the chip inside the cracked head was still readable, so the car had not lost any programming. The issue was the physical connection inside the key head had shifted enough that the chip was no longer sitting where the antenna in the column could reliably read it. Classic failure mode on these when the housing cracks.
I cut a fresh key blade to match her vehicle and transferred the work over to a new key head with a properly seated transponder chip, then programmed it to her TL at the OBD port. Took about 25 minutes total from the time I parked next to her.
She drove home that afternoon with a solid key. The dealer would have been fine too, eventually, but she would have needed a tow, a loaner, and about a week she did not have. I was already in the lot before her next class started.
