1998 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Rancho Bernardo?

Depends on the schedule when you call, but I give you a real arrival window on the phone, not a four-hour range. Being mobile and already on the road in the area means I can usually reach Santaluz and the surrounding parts of Rancho Bernardo faster than you could arrange a tow and get to a dealer service lane. Acura dealers also tend to want a scheduled appointment for key work, which could mean waiting days.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Almost certainly yes. The 1998 TL takes a standard metal key and I carry blanks and cutting equipment in the service vehicle. As long as I can decode your lock or pull the key code, I can cut and test a replacement the same day you call. No parts to order, no appointment to schedule.

Q: I only have one key left for my 1998 TL. Should I get a spare cut now or wait until I actually lose it?

Get the spare now. Every locksmith will tell you the same thing. When you still have a working key, I can copy it directly, which is the fastest version of this job. Once that last key is gone, I'm decoding the lock or sourcing the key code through another channel, which adds steps. It still gets done, but it takes a little longer and costs more.

Q: My 1998 TL key turns but feels stiff or sticky in the ignition. Is that a lock cylinder problem or a key problem?

Usually the cylinder, not the key, especially on a car this age. Worn tumblers, debris buildup, or a cylinder that's just seen a lot of years can all make the key feel wrong even when the key itself is fine. A worn key that's been used as the primary for years can also cause it, since the cuts get rounded down over time and stop engaging the tumblers cleanly.

1998 Acura TL Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A food truck owner working the farmers market near Santaluz had been running on one key for longer than he wanted to admit. He'd lost the spare somewhere during a busy stretch and kept putting off dealing with it. Someone told him Acura keys were dealer-only territory, so he just lived with one.

He reached out on a Tuesday after the lunch rush was winding down and asked what it would actually take to get a spare cut. I told him I could come to him right there in Rancho Bernardo and have it done before he broke down the canopy.

When I got there, the job was exactly what I expected. The 1998 TL uses a metal key cut to the vehicle. I decoded the lock, cut a replacement blade on site, and checked it in the door and the ignition. The whole thing was done while he was restocking his truck. He didn't need to tow anywhere, schedule anything, or take a weekday off.

He mentioned the dealer had been mentioned to him as the only option. He seemed mildly annoyed that nobody had told him sooner how simple it actually was.

How long does a 1998 Acura TL key replacement take?▼

For this generation TL, it's a short job. I decode the lock or work from the key code, cut the blade, and test it in the door and ignition. Most of the time you're looking at 20 to 30 minutes from when I arrive. There's no programming sequence, no waiting on equipment to connect, no timed countdown. It's a cut-and-check job, and I'm out of your way quickly.
