She was in the Moonlight Beach area of Encinitas, loading bags into the TL, when someone grabbed her purse. Keys, wallet, phone, everything gone in one pass. She borrowed a phone from another shopper and called her husband, then the police, then me.
The 2010 Acura TL was sitting in that lot with zero working keys. The Acura dealer told her husband they could order parts but the car would need to be towed in, the process would take three to five business days, and they recommended rekeying the locks since the stolen fob could still open the doors. The combined estimate was a number that made him pause.
I got there that evening. All-keys-lost is a different job than adding a spare. When an existing key is already in the system, adding a second is relatively fast because the car already trusts something. AKL means the stolen fob has to be made useless, so I clear the entire key memory first and start from nothing. I connected through the diagnostic port, wiped the old key data from the immobilizer, and programmed two new smart fobs from scratch. I also decoded the lock and cut the emergency blades to match the vehicle. Both fobs were tested at the door handles and at the start button before I packed up.
She drove home that night with her kids and two fully working keys. The stolen fob can still physically touch the door handle, but the immobilizer will not let the engine fire. That was the part that actually mattered to her. She saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and she did not have to wait until mid-week or arrange a tow.
The police report took longer than the key job did.
