His Smart Key, FCC ID M3N5WY8145, started the car on the first try. I cut him a spare too so he wouldn't be in this situation again.
The whole job took about 45 minutes and came out to around $318. Dealer would have been roughly $582 plus a tow and a Monday appointment. He drove home from that same trailhead with two working keys.
