Out in East Valley, Escondido, a delivery driver had snapped the blade off inside the door lock of his 2011 Acura TL. Not a clean break he noticed right away, either. He'd been running a worn, slightly bent key for months and it finally gave out during a long shift. By the time he called me, the blade tip was seated deep in the lock cylinder.
The first locksmith he reached told him the cylinder would need to be drilled and replaced. New lock, new keys, a bill that would have hurt. He called me for a second opinion before agreeing to that.
I extracted the broken fragment from the door lock using a pick set, working carefully around the wafer surfaces so nothing inside got damaged. Once the fragment was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact cut depths for a fresh key blade without needing the original to trace.
The chip inside the cracked key housing was still intact. I transferred it to a new shell, tested the fob's four buttons, confirmed the door handles were responding, and verified the car started and stayed running. The lock itself was untouched. You would not know anything had happened to it.
He saved a significant chunk over what that first call would have cost him, and he left with a working key and a lock that wasn't drilled. Getting a spare cut before that second key gets this much wear is the takeaway here.
