Cardiff-by-the-Sea has this particular kind of morning where the marine layer sits low over the neighborhood and the streets are quiet until about nine. I got a call well before that.
A woman had walked out to her car parked in front of her place off San Elijo, put the key in the ignition, and it turned fine. Engine cranked, fired up, then cut out almost immediately. She tried three more times. Same thing every time: starts, then stalls inside two seconds.
She figured it was a mechanical problem and had already called a shop before she called me. I asked her a couple of questions and told her it sounded like a transponder issue, not an engine issue. She was skeptical. I told her I'd come out and show her before charging anything.
When I got there, I looked at her key first. The rubber key head had a small crack along one edge, and the transponder chip inside was visibly loose when I held it up to the light. The chip wasn't making consistent contact. The immobilizer was reading nothing or garbage on every attempt, so it was killing the engine on purpose.
I had the right blank in the van. Cut it to her vehicle, transferred the programming, verified the chip was seated correctly in the new key head, and ran a test start. Engine came up and stayed up.
She had been about to authorize a tow to a shop that would have spent an hour looking at the wrong end of the problem. The job took me about thirty minutes on her street. She kept her appointment at the coffee place on the PCH instead.
