I got a call from a guy over in the Live Oak Park area of Fallbrook. He was in the parking lot of his gym and his 2012 Acura TL fob had given out on him completely. The housing had been cracked for a while, the kind of crack that starts small and you keep meaning to deal with it. He had pressed it together each time he used it, and then one morning it finally split apart in his hand. He tried to use the emergency blade to get into the door and it snapped off at the base. Two pieces of fob, one piece of blade, zero way into the car.
He found me and I drove out to him.
When I got there, I could see the fob had taken a real beating, but the circuit board inside the cracked housing was still intact. That mattered. When a fob board survives the fall, a lot of the work is already done. I decoded the door lock to get him in, transferred the working board into a new housing with fresh electronics and a new blade, then programmed the replacement alongside a second key so he would not be back in this position.
The part he appreciated most was watching it happen. He could see that the chip data from his original fob was the foundation of the whole job. Nothing mysterious about it.
He left the lot with two working keys. The dealer had already quoted him a number that made him wince, and the total with me was a fraction of that. The broken fob almost cost him a full all-keys-lost job. Almost.
If your fob is cracked but still powers up, call before it gets worse. The window between "cracked housing" and "unreadable board" is smaller than people think.
