Yes, and it's one of the more common calls I get on vehicles this age. Extraction is a standard mobile job. I use specialized picks and extractors to pull the broken piece without damaging the wafer stack inside the cylinder. If the cylinder survives the extraction intact, which it usually does when handled correctly, I can cut a replacement key right there and program the transponder chip to your CTS on the spot. You don't need a tow and you don't need a new ignition cylinder in most cases. The earlier I get there after the break, the better the odds the cylinder is still clean.

What is a transponder key and why does my 2003 CTS need one?

A transponder key is a metal key with an electronic chip embedded in the plastic head. There are no buttons, no remote functions. It just turns in the ignition like any other key, but the immobilizer in your CTS is reading that chip every single time.

If the chip signal is missing, wrong, or unprogrammed, the car will either crank without starting or fire up and immediately stall out within a second or two. That stall pattern is the giveaway. The engine isn't broken. The car is doing exactly what it's supposed to do when it doesn't recognize the key.

Cutting the blade at a hardware store gets you a key that turns the ignition but won't start the car. You need the chip programmed to match your specific vehicle. That's the part I do on site.

My Cadillac cranks but won't stay running. Could it be the key?

On a 2003 CTS, a start-and-immediately-stall is one of the cleaner signs that the immobilizer isn't recognizing the transponder chip. The engine management gets a crank signal, starts to fire, and then the security system cuts it because the key didn't pass the check.

A few things cause this. The chip in the key head can fail or crack over time. A copied key that was never properly programmed will do the same thing. And there's a separate issue worth ruling out first: the ignition switch on early CTS models has a known tendency to rotate slightly out of position under vibration or with a heavy keychain, which can cause stalls that look a lot like an immobilizer problem but aren't.

If you're seeing a security-related warning on the dash when it stalls, that points toward the key and immobilizer. No warning and it stalls randomly at speed, look harder at the switch. I can help sort out which one you're dealing with.

I bought a replacement transponder key online. Will it work if I just cut the blade?

No. Cutting the blade gets you into the ignition, but the chip still has to be programmed to your specific CTS before the car will start and stay running. An unprogrammed chip reads as an unrecognized key, same as no chip at all.

The 2003 CTS does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. You need someone with the right diagnostic equipment to write the key to the vehicle. I have two keys but one stopped starting the car. Do I need to replace the whole key?

Not always. The blade and the chip are two separate things. If the blade looks fine and turns the ignition smoothly, the issue is likely the chip inside the key head. Chips can fail from physical damage, a hairline crack in the plastic head, or just age. Sometimes the chip loses its programming without an obvious cause.

First thing I check is whether the key is actually turning freely or catching, which rules out blade wear. Then I test the chip response. If the chip is dead, I can often transplant the working components into a new key shell or program a fresh key to the car. Either way, you don't automatically need to replace both keys or start from scratch.
