I got a call from a woman parked in a lot off Mast Boulevard in Downtown Santee. Her 2009 Cadillac CTS was giving her a key-not-detected warning and she had already swapped the battery herself. Twice. She was convinced the fob was dead.
When I pulled up, she handed me the fob before I even got fully out of the van. The CR2032 she'd put in was fine. But the battery contact inside had a small bend from being pried open with a flathead, just enough to keep it from seating flush. Classic.
I straightened the contact, cleaned both terminals, and seated the battery correctly. That was maybe four minutes of work on the hood of my van.
Then came the part that actually matters. I walked every button. Lock. Unlock. Trunk release. Panic. Tested the range from across the lot and back. Ran three starts. Not because I expected to find more problems, but because that is the job. If something else is quietly failing, that test sequence catches it before it catches her somewhere less convenient than a parking lot in Santee.
Everything checked out. She said the dealer had quoted her a full fob replacement plus programming time, no questions asked. She paid a fraction of that for a contact straighten and a thorough test, and left with a fob that worked the way it should.
I see this a lot on the 2009 CTS. The fob itself is pretty durable. The way people open it is usually what causes the problem.
