She was parked in a lot off Beyer Blvd, maybe a quarter mile from the border crossing, and her 2016 CTS was just sitting there. Not locked out in the dramatic sense. The car knew someone was nearby but wouldn't let her in cleanly, and when she finally got inside and hit the start button, nothing happened. Key-not-detected warning on the dash. She'd already done the battery swap herself. New CR2032, correct size, seated right. Still nothing.

When I pulled up, I went through the basics before touching the OBD port. Checked the fob for obvious damage, confirmed the battery was making solid contact, tested the emergency insert key in the door cylinder. Everything mechanical was fine. The fob just wasn't pairing.
I connected my programming equipment and pulled up the vehicle's key data. The existing key registration had dropped, which happens sometimes after a battery goes completely flat or after a module update at a shop visit. It's not common, but it's a known behavior on this generation. I registered the fob back to the car, ran through all five buttons, tested the start, walked the doors. Done in about 35 minutes, start to finish, in the same parking lot where she'd been stranded.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her for a full replacement key, new fob and all. She didn't need a new fob. She needed the existing one re-enrolled. That's the kind of thing you only figure out by actually diagnosing the car, not by reading off a quote sheet.
