I was over near Dictionary Hill on a weekday afternoon. The customer had a 2007 Cadillac CTS that had been sitting for a few months after a family member passed, and the only key that existed was worn down to the point it was barely readable. The ignition was stiff, the security light was cycling on startup, and they had no idea if the key was the problem or something deeper.
First thing I did was decode what was left of the blade. Enough of the cuts were still visible to work from. I made a new key blank cut to the vehicle, tested it mechanically, and it turned cleanly.
Then came the part that actually takes time on these: the transponder relearn. The 2007 CTS immobilizer needs to see a properly programmed chip before it will let the engine run past a few seconds. I ran the security access through the OBD port, enrolled the new key, and did three cold starts spaced out to confirm the system was holding. Security light went off on the third start and stayed off.
The customer had already called a dealer before finding me. They were told to tow it in and plan on leaving it overnight. I did the whole job in the driveway, in about 45 minutes, for a fraction of what they had been quoted. They kept the worn original too, once I got a second key made from the same code. Backup key from day one.
