2017 Cadillac CTS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: The dealer told me I have to tow my CTS in for a replacement key. Is that true?

It's what dealers say, but it's not your only option. Dealers push the tow-it-in approach for all-keys-lost smart key jobs because their setup is shop-based. Mobile locksmiths do the same programming work at the vehicle using the same diagnostic access through the OBD port. No tow, no drop-off, no waiting a day or two for a parts order to come in. Towing adds cost before the dealer even looks at the car.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the 2017 CTS before you can make a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, which is typically your registration or title. I verify the VIN from the dash plate or door jamb on your CTS and confirm it matches your paperwork before any work starts. That's standard practice whether you're at a dealer or calling a mobile locksmith. Having those documents ready when you call keeps the process moving faster.

Q: I have one working smart key for my 2017 CTS. Can I add a second fob before I lose the first one?

Yes, and this is genuinely worth doing before something goes wrong. Adding a second fob while you still have a working key is a shorter process than an all-keys-lost job. All-keys-lost requires a full security reset with a timed countdown built into the process, which takes longer. If you still have one working fob, adding a spare is faster and simpler.

Q: My 2017 CTS shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could it be?

A few things. The battery contact inside the fob can lose its tension over time and stop making solid contact even with a fresh cell. The fob shell itself can develop a hairline crack that lets the internals shift slightly. There's also the antenna side of the equation: if the vehicle's receiver isn't picking up the signal cleanly, you get intermittent warnings that look like a fob problem but aren't.

2017 Cadillac CTS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Richland area of San Marcos, a 2017 CTS owner called me on a Tuesday morning. He'd been having intermittent issues with the car not detecting his fob, but the thing that finally pushed him to call was showing up to a parking lot and standing at the door handle for a solid ten seconds while nothing happened.

He'd already looked it up online. Found a few forum threads, decided the fob was shot, and ordered a replacement off a parts site. It arrived, he tried it, and it did exactly the same thing as the original. Because it had never been programmed.

When I got to him, I started simple. Popped his original fob open right on the hood of the car. The CR2032 was reading low on the meter. More importantly, the positive contact had a slight outward bow to it, just enough that the battery wasn't making solid contact. I straightened the clip, seated a fresh battery, and the fob woke right back up. Range came back, the door handle touch responded, everything reading clean.

The new fob he'd ordered was still sitting in the box. He asked if we should program it as a spare while I was already there with the equipment. That's the smart move on any vehicle where all-keys-lost programming is a longer process. We added it to the system as a second key, so he now had a working primary and a registered backup.

He'd been ready to go to the dealer. He didn't ask what the dealer would have charged. He just said he was glad he called first.
