I was out in Bressi Ranch on a Tuesday afternoon when I got the call. Guy had a 2004 Cadillac CTS sitting in his driveway, one key, and that key had just snapped at the head where the plastic meets the blade. The blade part was still in his pocket. The key head with the chip was rattling around loose. He wanted to know if I could sort it out on site.
When I got there, he handed me both pieces like maybe I could glue them back together. I told him that's not how this one works. The transponder sits inside the plastic head, and once that housing cracks and separates, you're not trusting a repair on the only key to a car you drive every day.
I cut a fresh blade to his vehicle, verified the transponder chip in the new key was blank, and ran the programming sequence. The CTS cranked right up, held the idle, and the security light went off the way it should. No drama.
He mentioned he'd already called a dealer and they wanted the car towed in, plus a wait time of a day or two because they were backed up. He was looking at missing work. I was done in about 40 minutes in his own driveway. The dealer quote was a good chunk more than what I charged, and he didn't lose the car for two days.
The one human moment: he asked if his old broken key would still work if he held the head against the ignition cylinder with his hand while inserting the blade. I told him that actually might crank the car once, but I wouldn't bet a morning commute on it. He laughed and said that's exactly what he'd tried before calling me.
