I got a call from a guy over in Buena Creek in Vista. He'd already paid another locksmith to cut and program a key for his 2012 Cadillac CTS. The key was physically correct, slid in fine, and the car cranked. But every single time, the engine fired for about two seconds and then died. He called the first locksmith back. That guy looked at it, told him the body control module was bad, and walked.
The BCM was not bad.
What had happened was the key learning procedure wasn't completed correctly. GM's immobilizer on this generation requires a timed security learn sequence run through the OBD port. If you lose power mid-sequence, rush it, or skip steps, the key can appear to write but it never commits to permanent memory. The system treats it as an unrecognized key, fires the engine briefly on the crank signal, and then cuts fuel. Cranks but stalls, every time. That's the tell.
I verified the blade cut was correct first, then connected through the OBD port, cleared out the failed partial write, and ran a clean learn from scratch with the full security timer allowed to complete. Confirmed the key was permanently stored before I even handed it back to him.
Three consecutive starts, no stall, no hesitation.
