Out in Spring Valley Village, right around Thanksgiving week, I got a call from a guy who was visiting his daughter and had been carrying a spare fob in his center console for two years without ever testing it. His 2013 CTS was his daily driver back home, and he figured while he had some downtime he'd have the spare properly set up so it wasn't just dead weight in a drawer.
He already had the fob. Bought it online a while back. Aftermarket blank, five buttons, the right profile. His question wasn't really about programming. It was whether an aftermarket key was actually going to hold up as a daily driver or whether he was going to regret not buying the OEM part.
Honest answer: the blank matters more than the brand name on the back. I test every batch of blanks I stock before they go into rotation. I've returned batches that had soft button membranes or loose board clips straight out of the packaging. The ones I carry are solid. The blade cuts clean, the button feel is good, and the transponder communicates correctly with the vehicle security system.
I cut the blade on site, ran the programming through the diagnostic port, verified all five buttons, and walked the doors. It worked the first time. The Cadillac crest is missing from the back of the housing and that was the only difference he could point to.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have quoted him, and he drove back home with a working spare instead of a very expensive paperweight.
