I got a call on a Tuesday evening from a guy staying near Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. He had driven up from the airport, checked into his place for a few days, and by the time he walked back to his 2014 Cadillac CTS the fob was dead. Not weak, not intermittent. The car would not acknowledge it at all. The cluster was showing a key-not-detected warning and it would not respond to the door handles.
He had already tried the obvious. New battery from a nearby pharmacy, seats the CR2032, same warning. He called the Cadillac dealer. They told him to tow it in and they could look at it the following afternoon.

I pulled up to the CTS, confirmed the battery was seated correctly, checked the contact points inside the fob housing. Everything looked fine mechanically. The fob itself had died, not just the battery. So this was a replacement job. I pulled the new fob out of my van, connected to the OBD port, and ran the pairing sequence through the immobilizer. The old fob got wiped out of the system at the same time so it cannot be used to start the car if it ever turns up.
The whole thing was done on site in about 35 minutes. He did not tow anything. He did not wait until the next afternoon. He paid a fraction of what the dealer was quoting, and he drove to dinner that night.
He mentioned on his way out that he had not realized a mobile locksmith could handle the programming side of a Smart Key. A lot of people still think that part requires a dealer. It does not.
