1996 Dodge Grand Caravan
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Scam locksmiths follow a pattern. Low number over the phone, inflated number when they show up. The car is already open or the key is already cut by then, and you are stuck negotiating in a parking lot. We give you a real price for your 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan before we come out. That number does not change when we arrive. You can also look us up: California BSIS license, verifiable, public record.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The 1996 Grand Caravan uses a mechanical key, so if the cut is right, the key works. It will turn the door locks and the ignition the same way the original did. We test both before we leave. There is nothing to pair or program on this vehicle, so once the blade is cut correctly, you are done.

Q: I only have a worn-down copy of a copy of my original key. Can you still make a good key from that?

This comes up a lot with vehicles this age. Keys get copied, the copy gets copied, and each generation loses a little sharpness on the cuts. Eventually the worn key barely works and any copy made from it is worse. The fix is to decode the lock directly rather than copy the worn key.

Q: My 1996 Grand Caravan ignition is stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Both are possible, and on a vehicle this age it is worth sorting out before cutting a new key. Ignition cylinders on vehicles from this era wear over time. The tumblers get stiff, especially if the key ring is heavy and puts constant side pressure on the cylinder. A worn key makes this worse because the cut depths no longer match the tumblers cleanly. If a freshly decoded key still binds, the cylinder itself may need attention.

1996 Dodge Grand Caravan Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a family at the U-Haul lot in Poway Business Park, early morning. They were halfway through a move, the Grand Caravan was loaded, and the only key to it had disappeared somewhere inside the truck cab or the cargo pile. Finding it meant pulling things apart they had just packed. The rental return deadline was hard, and the new place was expecting them that afternoon.

They needed a key, not a search party.

I was at the lot within the hour. The 1996 Grand Caravan runs a straightforward mechanical key system. I decoded the door lock cylinder with the right tool, pulled the cut from the lock, and had a replacement blade cut on my machine right there in the parking lot. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Turned right over.

The whole job was done before they finished repositioning the moving truck. They were back to loading with time to spare. The dealer would have needed the vehicle towed to them, then told the family to come back tomorrow. That was not an option anybody had.

Sometimes the value of a mobile locksmith is not about saving money. It is about keeping a hard day from becoming a derailed one.
