2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a dispatcher at a plumbing company over in the Bay Marina area of National City. She ran a small fleet out of a yard there, and one of the Grand Caravans had been giving the drivers trouble for weeks.
The flip blade would go in but the ignition felt gritty on the turn, like the key was catching on something. Drivers were jiggling it, forcing it sideways, killing time waiting for it to free up.
She'd already called the dealer. They quoted her a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and reprogramming. She was ready to schedule it when one of the plumbers told her to try a locksmith first.
I pulled up and watched the key go in. I could feel it -- not dead, just worn. The cylinder was catching because the internal wafers had worn unevenly. Classic wear pattern on a high-mileage fleet vehicle. The cylinder itself was salvageable.
I decoded the lock, replaced the worn components, and cut a fresh blade matched to the repaired cylinder. The existing fob electronics were fine. Tested every button, tested the ignition through three cold cycles, and let her watch the whole thing.
She held up the worn parts I pulled out and just said, "That's it?"
That's it. Nothing got replaced that didn't need replacing. The dealer quote was for a whole assembly swap. What she actually needed was a repair. Way less than what they wanted, done in the yard, and the van went straight back into rotation.
