1997 Dodge Grand Caravan
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1997 Dodge Grand Caravan Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Ramona Highlands, a homeowner called me about a 1997 Grand Caravan sitting in the driveway. The van had been in the family a long time and the only key left was worn down to the point where the ignition was getting unpredictable.

Some mornings it started fine. Other mornings she was sitting there wiggling it for five minutes. She had already called a dealer and they sent her to a locksmith across town who wanted her to tow it in.

I drove out and looked at the key first. The cuts were so worn you could barely read them. The original profile was almost gone on two positions. That kind of wear happens gradually and the driver adjusts without noticing until one day it just stops.

I decoded the lock cylinder directly, got a clean reading, and cut a new key blade to match. Tested it in the ignition, tested it in the driver door, tested it in the rear cargo doors. All three turned clean on the first try.

She asked if it needed any programming. I told her it was a straight metal key and the cut was the whole job. She seemed almost surprised it could be that simple. I get that a lot on vehicles this age. People expect a big production and it turns out to be a clean, fast trade on the side of the driveway. She saved a good chunk compared to what the other shop had quoted just to get the van off her property.
