2001 Dodge Grand Caravan
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over at Coronado Shores, one of the high-rise buildings right along the water. He had a 2001 Grand Caravan that wouldn't start.

Not a dead battery, not a bad starter. It would crank fine, then cut off almost immediately. He'd already had it towed to a shop that told him it was probably a fuel issue. A week and some money later, nothing had changed.

He found me and described the whole saga. I asked one question: did he have a second key. He didn't.

I drove out and looked at the key he was using. The plastic head had a crack running through it, barely visible unless you tilted it toward the light. The chip inside wasn't seated right anymore. It was reading just inconsistently enough to sometimes let the van fire, then killing it before it could fully start, because the immobilizer wasn't satisfied with what it got.

Cut a new key from the door lock, programmed it on site, and the van started on the first turn and idled smooth.

He'd spent real time and money chasing a fuel problem that wasn't there. The dealer was going to be his next call. He said whatever I charged was a fraction of what he'd already spent on guesses. That part wasn't my doing, but getting him a working key in his driveway in under an hour, that part was.
