He called from the Kit Carson Park area of Escondido on a weeknight, late. His 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan wouldn't start after a long janitorial shift, and he had another building to cover before midnight. Alone in a dark lot, no dealer open, and a tow wasn't going to get him anywhere useful before morning.

When I pulled up, the van had power. Lights worked, radio came on, nothing obviously dead. But it cranked and wouldn't fire. The fob buttons were responding, locks cycling, so the remote side was alive. That mattered.

I connected my programming tool through the OBD port and pulled the key registration data. The van's vehicle battery was weak, had been for a while by the looks of the voltage. A low-voltage event while it sat in the lot had knocked the fob out of the immobilizer's registered key memory. The fob itself was fine. The transponder chip was fine. The immobilizer just didn't recognize it anymore after the voltage dipped below what it needed to hold memory.

I stabilized the voltage, went through the relearn procedure to re-register his existing fob to the vehicle, and turned the key. It started on the first try.

He looked at me like I'd done something complicated. I hadn't. I'd just diagnosed it right instead of guessing. He made his next building on time. The dealer would have been a tow that night, a wait until morning, and a bill that was a fraction of none of that happening. The problem was never the fob. That's the part a parts-swapper would have missed.
