I was out in Crest, up in the hills east of El Cajon, on a Tuesday afternoon. The customer had already been through it. A previous locksmith had come out, tried to program a key to the van, and left without finishing. The van would crank but not stay running. She had been borrowing her neighbor's car for three days.
When she called me, the first thing she mentioned was that the other guy said the immobilizer module was "probably bad" and she should tow it to the dealer. That is a common exit line when a programmer fails and the tech does not know why.
I pulled up, plugged into the OBD port, and read the system. There were fault codes sitting in the immobilizer from the incomplete attempt. The module was not dead. It was confused. She asked me why the other guy told her the module was bad. I told her that a failed programming attempt can look like module failure if you do not have the right tool to read what actually happened. It is not always malice. Sometimes it is just the wrong equipment.
Dealer had quoted her a diagnosis fee plus parts and labor to potentially replace the module, before they had even looked at it. She paid me a fraction of that, and the van was running in her driveway before I left the hill.
