What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2002 Ford Escape?

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. All-keys-lost on this generation means every previously stored key has to be erased from the anti-theft system and at least two new keys have to be programmed in. Dealers will quote you the OEM key cost on top of labor, and you're also looking at a tow if the car won't start.

Yes, and this is one of the more important jobs we do. The anti-theft system on this Escape stores key identities, and a full reprogram wipes all of them, then registers only the keys you authorize going forward. Any lost or stolen key loses its ability to start the engine after that.

One thing to know: the metal blade on a lost key can still physically unlock the door if someone gets to the lock cylinder. The reprogram handles the start, not the mechanical lock. If keys were stolen, a police report is worth having for your records, and a full security reprogram is the right call to make those keys dead.

Does my 2002 Ford Escape key have a hidden emergency blade inside the fob?

The 2002 Escape uses a transponder key, not a smart fob with a hidden blade inside it. The key itself is the blade. The transponder chip sits in the plastic head of the key, and the whole thing goes into the ignition cylinder the way a traditional key does. There is no fob to crack open, no secondary blade tucked inside. If you're locked out, the solution is a replacement key cut to your vehicle or a lockout service. Keep the key head intact because the chip inside is what the anti-theft system reads on startup.

I bought a replacement key blank online for my 2002 Escape. Can I just have it cut and will it work?

Cut, yes. Work, maybe not on its own.

Getting the blade cut to your vehicle is the easy part. The part people miss is that the transponder chip in the key head has to be recognized by the anti-theft system before the engine will stay running. If the chip isn't programmed, the car will often crank, fire briefly, and then stall. That's the anti-theft system doing its job.

Whether the blank you bought has the right chip generation in it is the other variable. Some cheap blanks sold online carry chips that don't match what this system expects, and no amount of programming fixes a wrong chip. I test blanks before they go into rotation. If you bring me a blank you bought yourself, I'll tell you whether it's usable before we cut anything.

My 2002 Escape cranks but stalls right away. Could this be a key or anti-theft problem?

That pattern, cranks and starts then immediately dies, is a classic sign the anti-theft system isn't recognizing the key. It's one of the more common complaints on this generation of Escape. The system reads the transponder chip during startup, and if it doesn't get a valid signal, it cuts the engine after that brief fire.

A few things can cause it. The chip in the key may have failed over time, which does happen on keys that are 20-plus years old. The antenna ring around the ignition cylinder that reads the chip can also develop problems. And sometimes an old key that's been on a heavy keychain has taken enough vibration that the chip is cracked internally even though the key looks fine.

I diagnose this on site. If the key is the problem, I cut and program a replacement. If the antenna or something further in the system is the issue, I'll tell you exactly what you're dealing with before any work is done.
