Near RB Town Center on a Sunday morning, a woman flagged me down in a parking lot. She had already paid another locksmith earlier that week for a replacement smart key on her 2014 Escape. The key had been cut, the fob had been handed to her, and she had driven home. Two days later, intermittent starts. Then no starts at all. What likely happened with the first locksmith is a partially completed security registration. The vehicle accepted the new fob data in a temporary state but never wrote it to permanent memory, either because the process was interrupted or the security countdown timer was not allowed to finish. It is a real thing that happens when someone is rushing or using a tool that does not handle the timed sequence properly.
I connected through the OBD port with my programming equipment, cleared out the incomplete key data from the first attempt, and ran a clean all-keys-lost sequence from scratch. The security timer on this system has a countdown that you just have to sit through. No shortcuts. Once it completed, I registered her fob and confirmed the write. Cranked right up, no stall, no warning on the dash.
All five buttons on the fob checked out. She tested the start herself and watched the dash stay clean.
The dealer comparison came up on its own. She mentioned the shop had quoted her a tow plus a full dealer programming appointment. She had already paid the first locksmith once. What I charged her was a fraction of the dealer route, and she actually drove home this time.
