2020 Ford Escape
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to me in Rancho Bernardo?

We cover all of Rancho Bernardo including the Westwood area and typical arrival is within 30 minutes, depending on traffic. When you call, we confirm the year, make, and key type so the right blanks and equipment are already loaded before we leave. Ford owners going the dealer route have reported waits of several weeks for an appointment just to get started. We treat every call as same-day.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today, without going to a dealer?

Yes. Every service vehicle we run carries the blanks and programming equipment for the 2020 Escape. There is no part to order, no appointment to book for next week, and no two-trip process. Ford owners on the forums have shared stories about waiting weeks for a key blank to come in, or being told the second key they were promised at purchase was back-ordered. We show up once and leave you with a working key the same day you call.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or do I need a specific fob?

This comes up constantly. The short answer: it depends on what you bought. The 2020 Escape uses a specific fob for this generation. If the fob you ordered matches the factory FCC ID printed on your original fob and has the correct number of buttons, there is a reasonable chance it can be registered. Aftermarket fobs that are built to the same spec often work fine with professional programming equipment.

Q: My 2020 Escape shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fine. What else could cause that?

A few things besides the battery. First, the fob itself can fail. The internal circuit board takes a beating over time, especially if the fob has been dropped or gotten wet. The key-not-detected warning showing up with a fresh battery is a known complaint on this generation, and in some of those cases the fob needs to be replaced and re-registered, not just rebatteried.

2020 Ford Escape Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A condo owner in Rancho Bernardo called me from the Westwood area with a problem that had already beaten the dealer and a tow company. His 2020 Escape was sitting on level two of an underground garage.

Low ceiling, tight turns, one narrow ramp in. The dealer told him to get the car to them first. The tow company looked at the entrance and passed. He had no working key and nowhere to go.

I parked on the street, grabbed my bag, and walked down the ramp.

The job was all-keys-lost on a 2020 Escape. That means erasing the existing key memory and registering fresh fobs from scratch using diagnostic equipment. I carry a key cutter and everything I need for this generation of Ford. The garage smelled like exhaust and concrete, there was maybe six inches of clearance above my head at the lowest point, and none of that mattered.

I ran the security procedure through the OBD port, registered the new fob to the vehicle, and verified the start. The whole thing took under an hour on site. He drove out of that garage on his own.

The dealer quote assumed the car could somehow get there. It couldn't. That problem didn't exist for me.

Ford Escape Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2020 Ford Escape key replacement take?▼

There is a timed security delay built into Ford's immobilizer procedure that runs roughly 10 minutes and cannot be skipped. That applies whether you are at a dealer or using a mobile locksmith. It is just part of how this generation handles key registration. If you still have one working key and just need a spare added, total on-site time is usually 15 to 25 minutes once you include that wait.
