I was out in The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe when a guy flagged me down while I was wrapping up a different call. He had a 2007 Ford Escape sitting in his driveway and a story that took about thirty seconds to tell.
He had called one of those bait-and-switch outfits a few weeks earlier. The ad said one price, the tech who showed up named a completely different one after looking at the car, and when the owner pushed back, the price dropped just enough to get the job done. He paid it. He got a key that would start the car. That was it. Lock button, unlock button, panic button - all three dead. He had been manually unlocking the door for weeks because he didn't want to deal with another locksmith.
He found me through Google Guaranteed, and his first question was whether I was licensed. I gave him my BSIS number on the spot and told him to look it up while we were still talking. He did.
I pulled the fob apart on the hood of my service van. The blank he had been given was cut correctly for the blade, and the transponder side was registered well enough to start the car. But the fob board inside was the wrong part for this vehicle. The remote functions were never going to work because the board itself didn't match the factory FCC ID for the 2007 Escape.
I swapped in the correct board, programmed the remote to the vehicle, and walked all three buttons with him standing right there. Lock, unlock, panic. All of it working.
He asked what the dealer would have charged to figure that out. I told him they probably would have wanted to start from scratch and sell him a whole new key at full price. He said the first locksmith had charged more than I did and handed him something that half-worked. What he paid me was a fraction of that.
