I was parked near the Fairbanks Ranch gate on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. Owner of a 2013 Ford Escape, right there in Rancho Santa Fe. He'd already been through it.
He had called one of those ad-at-the-top-of-search locksmiths a few days before. Quoted forty-nine dollars on the phone. The tech who showed up tripled the price before touching anything, did something with the fob, and left. The smart key would start the car, but the five buttons were completely dead. Locks, liftgate, panic, nothing. He was operating a keyless entry car entirely through the door lock switches like it was 1998.
When he called me he led with one question: how do I know you're licensed. I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone and told him to pull it on the state site while we were talking. He did. We kept talking.
