I was parked off Community Road in South Poway when the call came in. The owner of a 2016 Ford Escape said the fob had been getting flaky for about a week, and that morning it just stopped letting him in. He was standing next to the car, pressing buttons, getting nothing.
He had already watched a couple of my YouTube videos before he called. He mentioned that seeing the actual tools and process on a real car, not an animation, was why he picked up the phone. That came up right away when I pulled up.
I walked the fob first. The CR2032 was original, still had some voltage but not enough to run the smart key system reliably. I swapped the battery, cleaned the contacts, and retested. Touch unlock came back on the driver side. Range recovered. But the fob had also developed a button issue from being dropped, so we moved forward with a replacement.
Programming the new fob to the Escape required connecting to the diagnostic port and going through the vehicle security system enrollment sequence. Once the new fob was registered and the old one was erased from memory, I walked every function: touch unlock on both handles, all five buttons, and three clean remote starts from across the parking lot. Everything was solid before I packed up.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait and a number that made him pause. He didn't end up needing that route. The whole job was done in his driveway off Community Road, same afternoon he called.
