So the fix isn't just pulling the fragment - it's extracting it, cutting a proper replacement blade, and programming a new key so the immobilizer recognizes it cleanly. That gets you back to a full working key, not a workaround.

Make the spare now. Here's the practical reason: on the 2003 Escape, programming a second key when you already have one working key is a faster and simpler job than an all-keys-lost situation. When you're down to zero working keys, the process takes longer and costs more because the approach is different. One working key on hand changes the job significantly in your favor.

Keys from this era also tend to fail in a few predictable ways - the chip can crack inside the head if the key takes a hard drop, the blade wears down after years of use and starts slipping in the ignition, or the head cracks from being on a heavy keychain.
