There's a laundromat over near the CSUSM area in San Marcos that I've gotten calls from twice now. This was the second one.
A woman had a replacement key made for her 2011 Escape about a week and a half before she called me. The key started fine for the first few days. Then it got inconsistent. Start in the morning, no problem. By the afternoon it would crank and crank but the engine wouldn't catch. Eventually it threw a key-not-detected warning on the dash and just sat there.
She figured it was an electrical issue with the car. It wasn't.
The locksmith who made the original replacement had used a chip that was close to correct but not quite right for this vehicle. On this Escape's immobilizer setup, "close" doesn't hold. The system can accept an imprecise chip during the initial programming window, then reject it once it runs its full security cycle. That's exactly what happened here. The car passed the key on day one and started waving it off by day eight.
I pulled out my programmer, read what was actually inside her old replacement key, and confirmed the chip was wrong for this application. Made a new remote head key with the correct chip matched to her vehicle, verified the remote functions, and swapped the CR2032 while I was at it because the battery was reading low and I wasn't going to hand her a key with a half-dead battery in it.
Tested it through a full lock, unlock, and start cycle before I left the parking lot.
She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her to call me first next time and skip that step entirely.
