My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. On the 2006 Escape's ignition cylinder, a broken key fragment can usually be extracted without pulling the whole column apart. The part that matters: once the key snaps, the transponder chip is no longer sitting in the right position for the immobilizer to read it. So the dash may power up normally but the engine won't crank. That's the immobilizer doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

The job is extract the broken piece, decode the lock or pull the key code, cut a proper replacement, and program the new remote head key. I don't hand back a hastily duplicated copy of a worn key. If it broke once, the cut was probably already gone.

Question 2

What exactly is a remote head key and why does the 2006 Escape use one?

It's a key where the remote fob and the key blade are one piece. The blade folds out, or in this case is fixed, and the plastic head of the key is also the remote. Inside that head there's a transponder chip that talks to the immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine won't start, even if the blade turns the cylinder fine.

The 2006 Escape also has three buttons on that head for lock, unlock, and trunk, all running off a CR2032 battery. The remote side and the transponder side are two separate functions in one shell, which is why a cracked or damaged key head usually means a full replacement rather than just a battery swap.

My Ford shows a key-not-detected warning. What should I do?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery causes exactly this symptom, and it's the easiest thing to rule out first.

If a fresh battery doesn't clear it, stop cycling the ignition repeatedly. On this generation of Ford's immobilizer, too many failed start attempts in a short window can put the system into a lockout state that takes a programmer to clear. It's not permanent, but it adds a step to the job.

If the battery swap doesn't fix it, the transponder chip in the key head may have lost its pairing, or the key itself has failed. That's a programming job, not a battery job. Call someone with the right equipment before you cycle it another ten times and make it harder than it needs to be.

I already have one working key. Can I program a second remote head key myself at home?

On this generation Escape, there is an onboard relearn sequence that works if you have an existing programmed key in hand. You use the working key to cycle the ignition in a specific timed pattern to put the system into programming mode, then introduce the new key. It's documented in owner forums and it does work, but the timing has to be right and the new key has to be a chip-equipped remote head key, not a blank shell or a basic copy from a hardware store.

If you bought a key online and want to try the onboard method, it's worth a shot with one working key present. If it doesn't take, or if you have no working key at all, you need a programmer on the OBD port. That's where I come in.

Question 5

The buttons on my remote stopped working but the key still starts the car. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. The remote function and the transponder are separate systems inside the same shell. If the key starts the car, the chip is still paired and working fine. The remote side runs off the CR2032, so swap the battery first. If the contacts inside the shell are corroded or the button pads are worn out, a shell replacement with a button pad swap can sometimes bring it back.

That said, if the plastic housing is cracked and the blade is loose, a full replacement is the cleaner call. A compromised shell on a key you're using daily is how you end up with a broken fragment in the ignition.
