Not necessarily. The transponder that starts the car and the radio transmitter that runs the remote buttons are separate systems inside the same unit. If the car starts but the buttons are dead, the CR2032 is the first thing to check. These batteries lose voltage gradually, and the remote side goes before the transponder does because transmitting takes more power than the passive chip read.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2005 Escape. Can I program it myself?

This generation does have an onboard add-a-key sequence, but it only works if you still have at least one working programmed key in hand. Out in Richland, a guy flagged me down on a job I was already wrapping up nearby.
