There's also a door-handle-side explanation: if range is short on one specific door but normal everywhere else, or if the start button sees the fob fine from inside the car, the issue is the antenna in that door handle, not the fob. These are two completely different fixes and it's worth narrowing it down before spending money on a new fob.
