She called at 9:45 at night from a pharmacy parking lot in the Grossmont Area of La Mesa. Her 2019 Infiniti Q60 would not start. She was an overnight pharmacist who had just arrived for her shift, and push-button start did nothing when she got back in the car after grabbing something from the trunk. No response at the start button, no crank, just a key-not-detected warning on the dash. She was alone in a dark lot with nine hours of shift ahead of her.
The dealer was closed. A tow would take the car away and leave her stranded. She needed it working right then.
When I pulled in, the first thing I did was check the main vehicle battery. It was borderline. Not quite dead, but low enough to have caused a problem. The Nissan/Infiniti intelligent key system on this generation is sensitive to voltage drops, and when the main battery sags at the wrong moment, the immobilizer can lose its stored fob pairing. That is exactly what happened here. The fob itself was fine. The car just forgot it existed.
I stabilized the system, then used my diagnostic equipment to re-register her fob through the OBD port. The immobilizer relearned the key, and the Q60 started cleanly on the first press.
She moved it to a well-lit spot near the entrance and went in for her shift. The fix was a fraction of what a dealer visit the next day would have cost, and that would have required a tow on top of it. The fob never needed replacing. The fob was never the problem.
