Almost always the CR1616 battery. The transponder in the key runs off the ignition ring, not the fob battery, which is why the truck still starts. But the remote buttons run entirely off that small coin cell, and when it drops below a certain voltage the signal either gets weak or cuts out entirely. Swap the CR1616 first. If the range comes back but feels short, check that the battery is seated flat against both contacts.
