I was parked near Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach when the call came in. A woman had driven her 2013 QX56 to the area for an evening walk, came back, and the fob just stopped responding. Doors wouldn't unlock from a normal distance, and when she got inside with the physical backup key inside the fob, the push-button start gave her a key-not-detected warning on the instrument cluster.
She had already tried the obvious stuff before she called me. Held the fob closer to the button. Tried the backup fob she had in her bag. That one was also reading weakly. At that point she figured she was looking at a tow and a dealer appointment.
I pulled up, popped both fobs open. The primary had a CR2032 that looked original to the vehicle, which would make it around eleven years old. The backup was a little better but not much. Swapped both cells with fresh ones I carry in the van.
Primary fob lit everything up immediately. Backup took a second cycle of the start button to confirm but registered cleanly. No programming work needed at all.
I still walked every function on both fobs before I closed up. Lock, unlock, rear liftgate, the panic button. Checked that the vehicle security system was reading both keys without hesitation. Everything came back solid.
Two fresh batteries, maybe fifteen minutes. She'd been a step away from calling a tow truck to haul that big SUV to a dealer and waiting two days. The fix cost her almost nothing compared to that route.
