I got a call from a woman up in Del Mar Heights, parking lot of the dry cleaner on the main strip. Her 2002 IS had been cut and programmed by another locksmith about a week before. It started fine the first few mornings, then it started getting inconsistent: start the car, drive to work, come back at lunch and the engine would crank for a second and die. I got there and the first thing I did was check the fob. The CR1616 was a no-name cell and it was reading low. Weak enough to explain intermittent immobilizer communication, but I didn't stop there, because a battery swap alone wasn't going to tell me whether the transponder had been registered correctly in the first place.
I connected my equipment and pulled up the key data. The transponder in her fob had been enrolled, but the registration wasn't clean. Something in the original programming session had written it in a way that passed surface verification but failed the deeper handshake the immobilizer runs when the engine is warm and the voltage drops slightly. That's why it worked cold in the morning and failed in the afternoon heat.
I wiped the registration, put in a fresh CR1616, and re-enrolled the key properly. Then I did what you always do to confirm: let the car sit, restarted it twice, checked the dash for any warning and got nothing. Solid.
She asked what the dealer would have done. Probably replaced the fob and charged accordingly, and maybe found the same root cause, maybe not. She'd already paid one locksmith for a key that lasted eight days. Paying a fraction of what a dealer visit would run, for a fix that actually held, made more sense than any other option on the table.
