Out in La Mesa, in the Grossmont Area, a guy had his only fob go completely dark. The IS was sitting in the driveway, push-button start, no spare, and the car wasn't recognizing anything. It was past midnight. He'd already looked up flatbed rates and was doing the math on dealer wait times.
He called me instead.
When I got there, the fob wasn't responding at all. Not intermittent, not weak range. Nothing. The CR1632 was down to almost no voltage, so I swapped it first just to rule it out. Still nothing. At that point the fob itself was gone, and with it being the only key, we were in all-keys-lost territory.
I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port and ran the smart key reset procedure for the IS. On these newer Lexus systems, all-keys-lost has a timed sequence built into the process, so you can't rush it. You work through it, let the system do what it needs to do, and then register the new fob. I programmed a fresh, unpaired fob on the hood of his car, confirmed every button, tested the door handle touch sensors on both sides, and verified the start button responded clean.
He asked me at some point how long the dealer would have taken. I told him to get an appointment first, then probably a day in the shop, and a tow to get it there since the car wouldn't recognize any key at all.
He saved a good chunk and didn't move the car an inch.
