I got a call from a woman in the Winter Gardens part of Lakeside. She'd had a smart key programmed by someone else about a week and a half earlier.
The car started fine the first few days, then it got inconsistent. Some mornings it would fire right up. By afternoon she'd press the start button and get a key-not-detected warning on the dash. She figured the car had developed some kind of electrical issue, maybe a ground problem, something expensive.
It wasn't the car.
I met her in the parking lot near her dry cleaner. She handed me the fob and the first thing I noticed was the CR1632 was showing low voltage when I tested it. But that wasn't the whole story. I connected my diagnostic equipment and pulled the key registration data. The fob that had been programmed to her IS was paired with the wrong chip generation. The vehicle security system on this generation of IS does a layered handshake, and the mismatch was passing just enough of that check to start the car cold, then failing the deeper verification after the system had been running for a while. That's a specific and frustrating failure mode because it doesn't look like a key problem at all. It looks like an intermittent electrical gremlin.
I programmed a correct replacement fob, verified every button function, walked the door handles for touch unlock, and confirmed the start button recognized the key every time. Then I swapped the CR1632 while I had it open, because why not.
She asked me what the dealer would have charged. I told her a lot more, and they would have had to order the part too. She laughed a little and went back inside to pick up her dry cleaning.
