I got a call from a woman in the Winter Gardens part of Lakeside. She'd had a smart key programmed by someone else about a week and a half earlier. The car started fine the first few days, then it got inconsistent. Some mornings it would fire right up. By afternoon she'd press the start button and get a key-not-detected warning on the dash. That's a specific and frustrating failure mode because it doesn't look like a key problem at all. It looks like an intermittent electrical gremlin.
I programmed a correct replacement fob, verified every button function, walked the door handles for touch unlock, and confirmed the start button recognized the key every time. Then I swapped the CR1632 while I had it open, because why not.
She asked me what the dealer would have charged. I told her a lot more, and they would have had to order the part too. She laughed a little and went back inside to pick up her dry cleaning.
