In Libby Lake out in Oceanside, I got a call from a woman who had owned her 2018 Lexus IS for about two years with a single fob. She had been meaning to get a spare cut. She never did.
The fob housing had developed a crack along the seam over time, probably from being dropped a few times and then living at the bottom of a bag. The crack widened, the board shifted, and one day the car just stopped seeing the key. Then she tried the emergency insert blade for manual entry and it snapped off inside the door lock. One problem turned into three.
When I got there, the broken housing was sitting on the hood and the blade tip was still in the lock cylinder. The board and the transponder chip inside the cracked shell were physically intact, which was the good news. I extracted the blade fragment from the lock, decoded the cylinder, and checked the chip. It read clean.
Rather than wiping and re-enrolling everything from scratch, I transferred the salvaged chip and board into a fresh shell, which kept the existing immobilizer registration intact and saved a meaningful amount of time. Then I cut two new blades to the vehicle and verified every function on both fobs: lock, unlock, the full button set, and the engine start sequence.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 45 minutes. If the chip had been damaged, we would have gone the all-keys-lost route and it would have taken longer. Keeping even a broken fob matters more than most people realize. The chip inside survives a lot.
