Downtown National City, late afternoon, guy leaning against his 2017 Lexus IS in a parking structure near the civic center. He'd already been on the phone with the dealer. They wanted him to tow it in and were quoting him days out, not hours.
His key fob had stopped being recognized. Swapped it, reseated it properly, tested every button. Handle touch unlock came back on both doors. Start button recognized the fob. He was relieved for about thirty seconds, and then I kept going.
On a smart key system I don't stop at "it works now." I check the emergency insert blade, confirm it turns the door lock cylinder cleanly, and make sure the fob is communicating at normal range, not just from eight inches away. Everything checked out. He didn't need a new fob, didn't need a tow, didn't need to sit at a dealer for two days.
The dealer comparison came up naturally when he mentioned the quote they'd given him over the phone. I just told him what I charged. He did the math himself.
