2013 Lexus IS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than going to the Lexus dealer for this?

On this generation of Lexus, yes, the gap is real. Dealers tend to price the fob, labor, and programming as separate line items, and owners dealing with an all-keys-lost situation often get hit with a diagnostic fee on top of that. Add a tow if the car isn't driveable and the dealer route gets expensive before anyone touches a key. We use professional diagnostic equipment and properly spec'd fobs, and we come to you.

Q: Does your price include everything, or are there extra fees for cutting and programming?

One price, everything included. The fob, the emergency insert key cut to your vehicle, programming into the Smart Key system, and a full function test before I leave. No separate line for programming labor, no surprise fee at the end. Dealers on these Lexus jobs sometimes quote the fob at the parts counter and only mention the programming charge separately when you're already there. That doesn't happen with us.

Q: My 2013 IS has a mechanical backup key inside the fob. When would I actually need it?

The emergency insert key lives inside the Smart Key fob and most owners forget it's there until they need it. If the fob battery dies completely and the passive door handle sensor stops responding, that blade gets you into the car through the driver's door lock cylinder. Once you're inside, you can also hold the fob directly against the start button to get enough signal for the car to recognize it, even on a nearly dead battery.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and have it programmed, or does the whole thing need to come from you?

You can buy the fob separately, but confirm the part number matches before you order - aftermarket fobs for this generation vary in quality and not all of them pair cleanly. Either way, programming it still requires professional diagnostic equipment. There is no button sequence or ignition-cycle trick that registers a new Smart Key on this vehicle. Bring the fob you bought, or let me source one. The programming work is the same either way.

2013 Lexus IS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Berry Park, Imperial Beach, around midnight. His 2013 IS was sitting in the driveway and the car wouldn't recognize the fob at all.

No response from the door handles, key-not-detected warning on the dash, push-button start completely ignoring him. He'd already done the right thing and tried a fresh battery. Still nothing. He told me he was about to start calling flatbed companies because he figured the dealer was the only option, and the dealer wasn't open until morning.

I told him to stay put.

When I pulled up, he was standing next to the car in the dark with his phone flashlight on, trying the fob one more time out of habit. I've seen that move a hundred times.

I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the Lexus Smart Key system. The previous fob got wiped out of the system, the new fob got registered, and I verified every function before I packed up. The whole job was done in the driveway. No tow, no waiting until business hours, no explaining himself to a service writer.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have quoted, and he didn't lose a night of sleep over it. The dealer part of that story was almost an afterthought by the time I was pulling out of the neighborhood. He just wanted his car back.

Lexus IS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2013 Lexus IS smart key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it will be a fraction of what the dealer charges. Lexus dealer pricing on smart key jobs for this generation tends to stack up fast once you add the fob from the parts counter, a separate programming labor charge, and any diagnostic fees. If you're all-keys-lost and can't drive in, towing to the dealer adds to that total before the job even starts.
