2012 Lexus IS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2012 Lexus IS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Bonsall, just off the back roads near the San Luis Rey River, I got a call from a guy who had been searching a marina parking area for about half an hour. His only fob for his 2012 Lexus IS was gone.

He had retraced his steps from the dock to the car twice and came up with nothing. He figured his only option was a tow to the dealer and a wait measured in days. I told him I could be there that afternoon.

When I pulled up, the IS was sitting in the lot, locked up tight. I got the door open with a mechanical entry approach and decoded the lock to figure out the exact cut the key needed. From there I cut a new emergency insert blade to match the door.

Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure. That process has a timed sequence built into it, so you cannot rush it. It clears all previously registered key data from the immobilizer and opens a window to register the new fob. Once that window opens, you complete the registration and test every function: door locks, start button, the whole sequence. His car started right there in the same lot where it had been sitting dead.

He had already called the dealer while he was waiting for me and gotten a quote that included the key, programming, and a tow since the car was not drivable. My total was a fraction of that, and he did not lose the car for multiple days. Lot to running in about 50 minutes.
